Flight to Antarctic, cruise to peninsula Antárctica and South Shetland Island

This cruise, which avoids the long navigation through the Drake Passage, offers the incredible opportunity of discovering the maximum of the Sub-Antarctic Peninsula and islands, saving 4 days of navigation.

DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN BUENOS AIRES

You land in Ezeiza, international airport of the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires. You recover your luggage and a driver takes you to your hotel. You profit from your first day in Buenos Aires to visit the city. You start by discovering the beautiful neighborhood of Recoleta, having lunch in a terrace of one of its many trendy coffee shops. You may continue with a walk along its parks and in the Recoleta cemetery. Then you set off to discover the colorful neighborhood of La Boca and its famous Caminito. In the evening, you go back to Palermo for dinner before returning to your hotel.

DAY 2: EL CALAFATE / RIO TURBIO / PASO DOROTEA / PUERTO NATALES

At the time agreed upon your driver takes you to the airport Jorge Newbery (Aeroparque). After a 3h20 flight, your Patagonian driver greets you at El Calafate airport, to reach Chile and Puerto Natales. You go by Esperanza village located at the center of the Province of Santa Cruz, and then diverges into Rio Turbio and the border pass Dorotea. After the formalities at customs, you rapidly arrive in Puerto Natales.
Puerto Natales: This small village is built on the shores of the Señoret canal, with the Andes range in the background. The port is full of beautiful multicolored houses.

DAY 3: PUERTO NATALES / PUNTA ARENAS

After breakfast you take the road to Punta Arenas. This city, founded in 1848 by Chilean colonizers who took possession of the Strait of Magellan, has had great activity up to the opening of the Panama Canal. Some beautiful monuments from those days remain. At 70km northwards of the city you can visit a huge colony of Magellan penguins on the beaches of Otway bay. In fact, from mid-October to the end of March, between 3000 and 5000 penguins get there to nest at Seno Otway. At Punta Arenas you arrange the formalities for your cruise.
Duration and distances: 250km / 3h15 from Puerto Natales to Punta Arenas.

DAY 4: FLIGHT KING GEORGE ISLAND / BOARDING THE CRUISE

You have breakfast at your hotel, and then a driver picks you up at the time agreed upon and takes you to Punta Arenas airport. You board for a flight over the Drake Passage. You fly 2 hours instead of navigating for 2 days to get to Antarctica. You land on King George Island and then board on Ocean Nova cruise. The Antarctic advantage and exploration begin. The cruise takes to the sea to make you discover the South Shetland Islands and the Antarctic Peninsula. You discover you cabin and the different decks at Ocean Nova.
King George Island: This island, called by Argentineans : « Isla del 25 de Mayo » is the biggest of the South Shetland archipelago. It houses numerous scientific stations the majority of which were built in the framework of a world cooperation of scientific research during the International Geophysical Year in 1957-1958.

DAY 5 and 6: DISCOVERY OF THE ANTARCTICA PENINSULA

After your first night on the Ocean Nova, you profit from the excursions on board the zodiacs to discover Antarctica’s nature. You admire the seals relaxing under the sun, and then you disembark on the shores of the peninsula. On Neko Harbour you easily approach colonies of penguins and you have fun watching them on their favorite playground, ice and water. You return to your cabin. You may also profit from the library, or join the lounge to share your experiences with other passengers and members of the crew.
Neko Harbour: This place was discovered by Gerlache during a Belgian Antarctic expedition from 1897 to 1899. Its name comes from a whaler which frequently used that bay. This place houses 250 couples of Papua Penguins. You can also find Weddell seals lying on the rocks.

DAY 7 and 8: VISIT TO THE SOUTH SHETLAND ISLANDS

On the ship, you can attend the conferences given by the members of the crew, who have a passion for nature and Antarctica. Then you set off again on an expedition with the guides of the crew to have a closer look on this nature of a breathtaking beauty and purity.
Gentoo Penguin: This penguin nests on places without snow. It is the most rapid penguin in the water, reaching 35km/h speed. It inhabits the Antarctica peninsula as well as the Sub Antarctic islands. The biggest colony of Papua penguins is found on the Falkland Islands.

DAY 9: RETURN / FLIGHT PUNTA ARENAS

Description: After you last night on the cruise, you wake up again with a view to the white continent. The Ocean Nova immediately reaches the coasts of King George Island. Once on base Frei, you board the plane to reach, after 2 hours, the coasts of the American continent. You land on the Punta Arenas airport, where a driver takes you to your hotel.

DAY 10: PUNTA ARENAS / SANTIAGO

After breakfast, your driver picks you up and takes you to Punta Arenas airport. This time you fly to the Chilean capital, Santiago de Chile. A driver is waiting to take you to your hotel. You take advantage of the afternoon to discover Santiago. You start at the historic center, with the central park of Santiago, Plaza de Armas. There you will find the Real Audiencia Palace, the National Historical Museum. You discover the Santiago Museum in one of the best preserved colonial houses in the city, the Casa Colorada. Later, you go to Cerro San Cristóbal, to admire the beautiful view over the city and the mountain range. In the evening, you visit the neighborhood of Bella Vista, the liveliest one in the city, to have dinner. It is also in one of its streets that stands the house of Pablo Neruda.

DAY 11: INTERNATIONAL FLIGHT

At the time agreed upon with the driver, he will pick you up and take you to Santiago airport for your international flight. You leave the Chilean capital after a fabulous epic from Buenos Aires, passing through Patagonia and finally Antarctica. Great stops for an unforgettable voyage.
