Cruise Australis in Patagonia: from Ushuaia to Punta Arenas

3-night-cruise departing from Ushuaia, passing through Cape Horn, the glaciers Piloto and Nena, then Punta Arenas.

DAY 1: INTERNATIONAL FLIGHT / BUENOS AIRES

You land on Ezeiza International airport. You get your luggage and your driver greets you and takes you to your hotel. This first day is ideal to start a visit of the Argentine capital. You have lunch in the neighborhood of Palermo, the trendy and bohemian area of the city, and in the afternoon you discover the beautiful neighborhood of Recoleta. You visit the famous cemetery with the same name, the Argentinean Père Lachaise, where you visit in particular the tomb of renowned Evita.

DAY 2: BUENOS AIRES / USHUAIA

After breakfast, your driver picks you up at the time agreed upon to go to Jorge Newbery, the domestic flights airport in Buenos Aires, located in the neighborhood of Palermo. After a 3h40 flight, you land at Ushuaia airport. Your Patagonian driver greets you and takes you to your hotel. You profit from this day to discover the city of the end of the world. The city is a tax free area, so you can do a bit of shopping.

DAY 3: USHUAIA / DEPARTURE OF AUSTRALIS CRUISE

Between 9h and 16h, you can go to the office to leave your luggage and go through customs formalities. You then have the opportunity of discovering the city, on foot for instance. You can have a panoramic view from the Sailing club. You can visit the former prison where the Marine Museum is located. There you discover rooms which describe life in prison, detailed models which cover over 500 years of history, as well as an interesting exhibition which depicts the discover and exploration of Antarctica.
Boarding the Crucero Australis: You board between 17 and 18h. You are invited to a welcome cocktail. The boat soon hoists anchor and heads towards Navarino Island and Cape Horn.

DAY 4: AUSTRALIS CRUISE / CAPE HORN - WULAIA BAY

You sail in Nassau Bay up to a Group of island called Hermite, of which Horn island is part. It is a natural promontory 425m high, from where you can see the Pacific and Atlantic oceans meet. This mythical land, discovered in 1616, was then named Reserve of the Biosphere by UNESCO. In the afternoon you disembark on Wulaia Bay. This place offers a fabulous visual scene due to its vegetation and geography. You reach a viewpoint through a forest of lengas and coihues. The boat takes the Beagle Channel again and heads towards the area of the Patagonia glaciers.
Comment: the disembarkation at Cape Horns is subject to the caprices of Eolo.

DAY 5: AUSTRALIS CRUISE / PIA & GARIBALDI GLACIERS

You wake up while the ship is navigating on the northwest arm of the Beagle Channel. You enter in the Pia fjord, until the viewpoint just in front of the monster : the Pia glacier. You turn around then enter in the Garibaldi Fjord. After a short walk, you get in the Patagonian Wood to discover a glacial waterfall, before the attraction of the day: the Garibaldi glacier. These two glaciers are located in the Darwin range. This mountain range includes the greatest summits of Tierra del Fuego. The boat continues navigating through the Magdalena canal and the Strait of Magellan. Cormorans, sea lions and Magellan penguins accompany you all along this voyage.

DAY 6: AUSTRALIS CRUISE / CONDOR & AGUILA GLACIERS

You navigate on the Cockburn channel, then The Agostini channel. With the help of the Zodiacs, you will be able to land again and walk toward a lake created by the glacier thaw, before to reach the front of it. Then you approach the Condor, another majestic glacier of the region. Your guide teach you the formation of the glaciers and its influence on the valleys and the beautiful fjords creations.

DAY 7: MAGDALENA ISLAND / PUNTA ARENAS

After breakfast on board, you disembark on Magdalena Island. This island is the haven for a huge colony of Magellan penguins, which you can observe during your walk up to the lighthouse. You then reach the final destiny of your cruise, Punta Arenas, by the end of the evening. After leaving your luggage at the hotel’s room you depart immediately for a first discovery of the city. Founded in 1848, it had great activity up to the opening of the Panama Canal. There are still some beautiful monuments of that age. You have dinner at Punta Arenas, taking advantage of sea food.

DAY 8: PUNTA ARENAS / SANTIAGO DE CHILE

After breakfast, you take advantage of the morning to do a bit of Shopping at the stores in Punta Arenas, mainly around the Hernando Magallanes Park. After having lunch in the city, your driver picks you up and takes you to Punta Arenas airport. After a 2h40 min flight you land on the Chilean capital, Santiago de Chile. Your driver greets you and takes you to your hotel in the neighborhood of Bella Vista. At night you can have dinner at the excellent restaurant of your hotel, Pasta e Vino which offers an Italian cuisine which surprises for its creativity.

DAY 9: SANTIAGO DE CHILE / INTERNATIONAL FLIGHT

After breakfast at your hotel, you visit the city. You go to the historical sites of the Chilean capital, its historical and civic center, its Plaza de Armas, the current government headquarters at the Mint Palace, the palace of the Real Audiencia or the Casa Colorada (Red House). You continue by the basilica de la Merced, the church of San Francisco, the theater and the municipal library. You can also go up the Cerro de Santa Lucia which looms 629 m over the historical city center. You ascend the Cerro San Cristóbal, which has a magnificent view over the city and the Andes. You go back to the hotel at the time agreed upon, your driver picks you up and takes you to the international airport in Santiago.
